HDLC endorses Counter-Summit

Attention, Canadian trade unionists!

On October 17th, 2024, acting on a recommendation of its Political Action and its Executive Committees, the Hamilton & District Labour Council voted unanimously to condemn NATO and to endorse the Counter Summit (to NATO’s 70th Annual Parliamentary Assembly) to be held on Sunday, November 24th, 2024, in Montreal.

We urge all Canadian trade unionists to submit similar resolutions to their union locals, labour councils, and provincial and territorial labour federations for approval. In this way, support for the Counter Summit, whose main aim is to get #CanadaOutOfNATO and abolish NATO altogether, will broaden and the labour movement will become more involved in the struggle for an independent, peaceful, and just foreign policy for Canada.

Executive Committee,
Hamilton Coalition To Stop The War

Canada Out of NATO resolution

Whereas:

Canada was a founding member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949 and has participated in every NATO intervention;

NATO has failed to uphold Article 1 of its charter “to settle any international dispute in which they may be involved by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security are not endangered

Throughout the year, NATO engages in exercises and operations, which involve thousands of soldiers and vehicles that adversely impact the climate and environment;

NATO relies on a dangerous deterrence doctrine, which risks the use of nuclear weapons;

Canada has refused to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons because of NATO;

NATO is a U.S.-dominated military alliance that impedes Canada’s sovereignty over our defence policy and civilian control of our military;

and

NATO’s aggressive military postures vis-a-vis Russia and China, and its close ties with the apartheid Israeli regime, threaten to drag the entire world into WW111.

BIRT Hamilton District Labour Council calls for Canada to do the following:

  1. Withdraw from NATO;
  2. Remove Canadian troops from Latvia;
  3. Reduce military spending; and
  4. Conduct public consultations on a new foreign policy based on peace and international cooperation.

BIFRT the HDLC encourages both the OFL and CLC to do likewise;

BIFRT the HDLC endorses the Counter Summit to NATO which will take place in Montreal on November 24, 2024
