Canada is the bully, not China

Your editorial, “Olympic boycott would grab China’s attention,” is misleading.

It wasn’t China that appropriated the role of international bully. It was Canada which kidnapped Meng Wanzhou at the request of the Trump administration, which announced, six days later, that it intended to use her as a “bargaining chip” in Trump’s trade war with China. Moreover, it’s clear to us that the best thing Canada could do to get a better deal for the Two Michaels would be for Justice Minister Lametti to release Meng immediately and unconditionally under Section 23 of the Extradition Act.

Boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022 would be hypocritical. During the past 20 years, NATO has illegally invaded and occupied Afghanistan, causing misery and death, creating millions of refugees who became a burden to many countries. Yet, China never called for boycotting the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City 2002, Vancouver 2010 or London 2012. So, why should Canadians now use the Beijing Olympics to express displeasure with Chinese foreign policy?

And why should Canadian athletes be made to pay the price of a boycott for which they have sacrificed and trained for years? Let’s recall that, since ancient times in Greece, the Olympic Games have been an occasion to put aside political conflicts in favour of peace.

Let Meng go and, as Canadians, let’s participate fully in the Beijing Winter Olympic Games of 2022!
