The Hamilton Coalition to Stop The War firmly opposes the latest US and Israeli attempts at regime change in Iran. We know that these coup attempts have nothing to do with freedom and democracy or concern for the welfare of ordinary Iranians, because the clear intentions of the illegal US and Israeli meddling in the internal affairs of Iran is to put the autocratic son of the late despised Shah into power.

The regime change playbook, utilized in Libya, Syria, Venezuela, and many other colour revolutions in countries out of favour of the US empire, is unfolding in Iran with demonization of leaders, crushing economic sanctions, sabotage of the national currency, assassinations, and loosening upon the population of hired thugs who commit heinous murders and arsons, which they try to blame upon the Iranian government. Headlines in western mainstream media, claiming the deaths of thousands of protesters, are all coming from un-named, US-based “human rights” sources (read: “their own regime- change assets in Iran”), creating a false narrative to justify a US military intervention. Meanwhile, millions of Iranians took to the streets in virtually every Iranian city this week to show solidarity with their elected government and to bury civilians killed by the armed terrorists as well as one hundred assassinated first responders.

The USA has never forgiven the Iranian people for overthrowing the pro-Israeli, pro-western Shah in 1979; for nationalizing the oil industry and using oil profits to fund social programs; and for making allies of Cuba, Venezuela, China, and Russia, among many others.
Canada has had dirty hands in the matter of Iran as the US empire’s junior partner from the days of its support for the overthrow of President Mosadegh in 1953 (he tried to nationalize Iranian oil) to Canada’s own illegal coercive economic measures against Iran, which likewise began long ago.

We call on the Carney government to:

1) re-establish diplomatic relations with Tehran, cut by PM Harper in 2012;

2) restore Iran’s embassy and cultural properties in Canada, which properties were seized by the Trudeau government in 2019;

3) terminate all of Canada’s coercive economic measures against Iran, its armed forces, and citizens;

4) remove the Islamic Republic of Iran and its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps from Canada’s terrorist list. Supporting the Palestinian cause and fighting ISIS is not terrorism. It’s counter-terrorism!

5) develop an independent foreign policy by quitting NATO and observing the UN rules-based order which prohibits meddling in the internal affairs of, and threats of violence against, UN member states.

If the USA and/or Israel intervene militarily again in Iran, we will call upon Canadians to take to the streets to oppose the illegal aggression.
