The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the U.S.-led, nuclear-armed military alliance that was founded by twelve countries including Canada in 1949, is holding it’s 70th Parliamentary Assembly in Montreal, Quebec, November 22-25, 2024.

Since 1990, NATO has left a trail of death and destruction with interventions in former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Libya and now Ukraine. These interventions have led to failed states, environmental damage, violence against women, and humanity’s largest refugee crisis. NATO allies have also wasted trillions of dollars on wars and weapons that have enriched the arms industry and exacerbated conflict around the world.

NATO weapons are prolonging the war in Ukraine and genocide in Gaza. Since 2022, Canada has sent $4 billion in so-called “military aid” to Ukraine to prolong a NATO proxy war against Russia, while rejecting negotiations to end the war. NATO calls Israel “its vital ally in the Middle East” and allies continue to send Israel weapons, despite it conducting a brutal genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and a new phase of destruction and war against Lebanon.

As NATO meets in Montreal, antiwar and peace activists and organizers will oppose NATO at the “No to NATO, Yes to Peace” counter-summit against NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly on Sunday November 24 in Montreal. The counter-summit is organized by the Canada-Wide Peace & Justice Network (CWPJN) with the support of local antiwar and social justice organizations. The counter-summit will feature local and guest speakers, with panels and workshops on the dangers of NATO and how the antiwar movement can organize for Canada Out of NATO and to abolish NATO!
